This module opens Course 1 on Disability Basics and lays the foundation for everything that follows. It begins by asking learners to think about their own understanding of disability before diving into facts, figures and real examples. Over the next twelve topics, the module builds a broader picture of what disability means, how common it is globally and in India, and why it matters in daily life, at work, in school and in every community.

Along the way, learners will see the difference between visible and invisible disabilities, understand the legal recognition of disability in India through the RPwD Act 2016, and work through common myths that often limit opportunities for people with disabilities. The module closes with the idea of the journey to inclusion, moving from awareness to understanding, acceptance and true inclusion.

By the end of this module, learners should be able to define disability more broadly, recognize different types of disabilities including ones that are not immediately visible, and understand why respect and accessibility benefit everyone, not just people with disabilities. This sets the stage for the practical tools and strategies covered in the modules ahead.
